2019-12-24 · Cats was always going to be an especially strange and tricky story to adapt to the big screen. The musical premiered on the West End in 1981 and stayed there for 21 years, despite Cats' story being notoriously off-the-wall in terms of structure, character, and plot, or lack thereof.

Very luckily Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats contains verses that are extraordinarily musical; they have rhythms that are very much their own, like the ‘Rum Tum Tugger’ or ‘Old Deuteronomy’ and although clearly they dictate to some degree the music that will accompany them they are frequently of irregular and exciting metre and are very challenging to a composer. Just as Cats had forced 42nd Street to evacuate the Winter Garden six years before, Phantom of the Opera now pushed 42nd Street out of the Majestic Theatre and across the street to The St. James. Literally and figuratively, the American musical was in a forced retreat.
